Kokdu, also known as Gwannung or Tuttugi, is a traditional Korean puppet show that features wooden figurines known as kokdu, each representing a character from Korean folklore or mythology.
Season of Deity 1 is a modern adaptation of the kokdu puppet show, produced by the National Theater Company of Korea. The performance tells the story of a young girl named Gye-hwa, who must embark on a quest to return a stolen kokdu to the heavens before the entire world is plunged into darkness.
The show incorporates elements of traditional Korean music and dance, as well as intricate puppetry and visual effects. The puppeteers manipulate the kokdu on stage while dressed in all black, blending into the shadows and giving the impression that the puppets are moving on their own.
Season of Deity 1 premiered in 2010 and has since been performed around the world, garnering critical acclaim for its innovative take on a traditional art form.
